Beginnings of The Katrina School of Art...
Katrina Suzanne Wahl 1982 - 2001
(Self portrait pictured above)
|
| The middle child of five in the Russ and Loraine Wahl family--Katrina Suzanne--was always one for doodling on any available scrap of paper. Katrina's world of drawing was broadened when, at fourteen, she began working her way through Barry Stebbing's video art course. By the fall of her nineteenth year, she was majoring in art at a Christian university. But even while she grew to excel in the use of the pen and paintbrush, she increasingly struggled with some personal problems, and over the fall break 2001, Katrina gave up the struggle.
During the early months of 2006, Loraine Wahl had several telephone conversations with Mr. Stebbing about Katrina's benefit in using the How Great Thou ART curriculum and later, her college art courses. Upon hearing more of her life, he enthusiastically introduced the idea of an art school as a wholesome God-honoring alternative to the often secular, and sometimes immoral art courses offered by even the more conservative colleges. They agreed in their desire to offer artists a place of instruction that would encourage them to see and accurately portray creation as it really is--a beautiful gift from God.

Lavonne Dyck Biography
Lavonne Dyck
|
|
Lavonne (Graber) Dyck was born in southeastern Iowa. As a young girl, she enjoyed drawing portraits and in 1970 she graduated with a B.A. in Art Education from Bethel College, Kansas. For two years, she worked in the creative arts department at Prairie View Mental Health Hospital in Newton, Kansas.
Her teaching career began in Freeman, South Dakota. She taught art to grades 4 through 2nd year college level for 24 years, as well as overseeing the entire art program. During that time, she married Harvey and together they raised two daughters on their own farm near Freeman. As a young mother, Lavonne began to attend art fairs where she would draw portraits on-the-spot. To this day, she continues to draw portraits at fairs and also from photos sent to her. As part of her free-lance art business, Portraits and More, she draws posters, pets, homes, illustrations, and fulfills various other commission requests. Colored pencil and graphite are her favorite mediums, and her artistic style is softly drawn realism.
After 25 years in South Dakota, Lavonne and her husband made the momentous decision to move 1000 miles north to Glenbush, Saskatchewan, Canada to purchase Harvey’s family’s farm. Currently, Lavonne is very active in her local church.
Other interests which occupy Lavonne’s time are rug weaving, gardening, taking photos in the garden and community, singing in a ladies’ group, reading and more reading. She is a member of an area wide artists’ group that hosts a self-guided tour, where guests are invited to see artists at work in their homes. Visit: www.northernhorizons.ca (click on exhibits 9-12)
Artist’s quote:
I recognize my artistic talent as God-given and nurtured. God has blessed me so much and my heart’s desire is that my life and art will honor the name of His son, Jesus. If I would use one word to describe my artwork, it would be JOY.
